Can a younger window still need full replacement?

Age alone does not establish whether replacing a sash is appropriate. Start with the condition of the existing frame.

By Scott Dunfield · Product guidance reviewed October 2026

The answer

Yes. Frame damage, warping, twisting, or a frame that is no longer plumb, level or square can require full-unit replacement regardless of age. A replacement sash must also be compatible with its frame; Pella replacement sashes are not intended for non-Pella frames.

Start with the existing product.

Send overall interior and exterior photos, a readable product label or serial number if available, and close-ups of the area in question. Identify the room and elevation so the photos can be matched to the correct opening.

Use the window identification photo checklist to get started. For a storm project, the hail documentation guide explains what information to collect.

Review the specific project before finalizing the scope.

Product identification, frame condition and current replacement availability need to be reviewed together. These pages explain product and local service guidance; they do not determine an insurance company’s coverage decision.
