Can hail-damaged aluminum cladding be replaced by itself?

A contractor guide to the replacement-cladding question on a Pella wood window or patio-door hail project.

By Scott Dunfield · Product guidance reviewed October 2026

The answer

Pella eliminated replacement aluminum cladding for its wood window and patio-door brands in 2019, including current and older vintages. Where available and appropriate, replacement sashes or panels are used instead. When those are unavailable, the frame is damaged, or local replacement criteria apply, full-unit replacement may be necessary.

Scott will review the product and condition before recommending the scope.

Start with the existing product.

Send overall interior and exterior photos, a readable product label or serial number if available, and close-ups of the area in question. Identify the room and elevation so the photos can be matched to the correct opening.

Use the window identification photo checklist to get started. For a storm project, the hail documentation guide explains what information to collect.

Review the specific project before finalizing the scope.

Product identification, frame condition and current replacement availability need to be reviewed together. These pages explain product and local service guidance; they do not determine an insurance company’s coverage decision.
